UPMC mailing exposes patients to identity theft risk

Another mishap at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center involving Social Security numbers has exposed thousands of patients to the threat of identity theft - read more:post-gazette.com

Sam Gerrans, Senior Technology Consultant at InfoWatch said, "In this case, the university sent out 6,000 letters with the Social Security number of the recipient clearly visible. While the likelihood of mass identity theft here is low, the point is that had the university been using an information leakage software solution, the program would have picked this up at the point at which the user or users began the print run."
