Year 2008 in Germany was remarkable for mass leakage of confidential data from the companies, mostly personal data.
December 13th, thelocal.de informed that Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper received by post the microfilm containing samples of documents with full financial information of the clients of one of the banks of Berlin. The documents contained not only the standard set of data, such as the names, addresses, etc.) but also the numbers of credit cards and pins. The approximate volume of leakage are tens of thousands of compromised data.
In November on the black market appeared the personal data of 21 million of Germans. The journalists were offered to purchase the huge database for 12 million Euro. The CD contained names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, bank account numbers. The scale of leakage is unprecedented.
In October 2008 one of the leading German mobile operators became notorious for the leakage of 17 million data of its customers. The clients’ database contained names, addresses, dates of birth and e-mails.
The CSI Computer Crime & Security Survey, 2008, shows the polled companies registered the data leakage to be the second problem of corporate IT security (44% of polled companies) after the virus attacks (50% of companies) which they face regularly.
At that according to analytic center of InfoWatch, company-developer of data leakage prevention solutions, only no more than 25% of German companies use HTTP traffic monitoring systems for protection from confidential data leakage, and less than 5% use the systems of filtration of outbound e-mails. Comparing this data to the statistics of personal data leakage in Germany in 2008 we can draw a conclusion that the situation with protection of sensitive data in German companies is extremely critical!
