Sony notifies 5000 customers of credit card breach

A recent security breach at the Park Ridge, New Jersey headquarters of Sony Card Marketing & Services Company (CMSC) affected customers who signed up for the Sony Rewards program.

According to a letter sent by John Briesch, the President of CMSC, to the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office, CMSC discovered that “unauthorized copies were made of certain credit card numbers, with associated names and expiration dates, and in some cases, emailed to an account outside of the Sony Rewards network without authorization.” The breach affected customers who used the Sony Rewards website (www.sonyrewards.com) between February 1, 2009 and April 30, 2009.

The breach was discovered on May 13. According to a corporate spokesperson, a suspect was subsequently arrested that day within the Park Ridge offices.

Sony has notified approximately 5,000 customers of the incident, and has offered them free services through Debix. The company reports that to date, however, there is no indication that any customerРІР‚в„ўs information has been misused.
