Sam Gerrans, Senior Technology Consultant at InfoWatch said, "The information lost consisted of records of automated teller machines, withdrawal and deposit slips, and copies of tax payments as well as names and account numbers. It did not include passwords. However, this is immaterial to the main point which is that measures to protect personal information are woefully inadequate across the board, and even in the case of this major bank.

"Apart from the potential loss and inconvenience to the bank's customers and a major blow to its reputation, the potential material losses are huge. The cost to Resona Bank for account monitoring alone over three years total almost a third of a billion dollars. And that's just the beginning."
