Last weekend, an electronic device, which contained 11,000 recordings, was stolen from a building of the University of Victoria. Among the compromised personal data were social security numbers of employees, bank account details and other information. The device was not encrypted.
According to the report, the unencrypted information carrier was stored in a safe which the assailants managed to crack. On Monday the victims were informed of the robbery which took place. The management of the University advised employees to analyse all credit card transactions which took place from the moment of the information leak. Scott McCanell, acting director of PEA (Professional Employees Association) has called on the management of the University to reimburse the cost of the losses incurred by the victims as a result of the incident.
