The Navy said a civilian Web site exposed personal data of 28,000 sailors and their family members and has launched a criminal investigation.
A Navy spokesman said the site included names, Social Security numbers and birthdates. He said the information was in five documents that have now been removed.
The official said there's no sign so far that the information was used illegally.
The Navy is contacting people who are affected and encouraging them to keep an eye on their bank accounts and credit card statements.
