Motorola employee jailed for leaking commercial secrets

According to the prosecutor, the criminal stole over 100 important documents from the company and tried to transfer the information to China.

According to a Reuters report, referencing the prosecutor’s press-service in Chicago, USA, a Motorola employee has been sentenced to 4 years of confinement for publicizing commercial secrets of her former employer.

In 2007, the 41-year-old programmer Hanjuan Jin was arrested at the O’Hare Internal Airport in Chicago while attempting to fly to China with a large amount of company insider information. The suspect was carrying a one-way ticket to China and over 1000 important documents.

During the investigation, Jin was accused of belonging to a Chinese industrial espionage organization which threatens the USA’s economic development. The prosecutor stated that the employee of the large American company tried to transmit confidential information to the Chinese telecommunications company Sun Kaisens, which is developing technologies for the People's Republic of China’s armed forces. Motorola accused the former employee of publicizing commercial secrets and commercial espionage in the beginning of this year.

On Wednesday, August 29 district judge Ruben Castillo pronounced Jin guilty of attempting to publicize Motorola’s commercial secrets, yet he considered the accusation of industrial espionage unproven.

According to the court sentence, besides jail time, Jin must pay $20,000 in fines. She will be under house arrest and electronic surveillance until October of this year. In November the criminal will be transferred to a federal prison to serve her jail term.
