Medical workers lose information again

Indianapolis, USA. Thieves stole a laptop from a Cancer Care Group employee’s car, which contained personal information about 55,000 medical center patients suffering from oncological diseases.

The incident occurred on July 19. The Cancer Care Group employee left his work laptop in his car, with information on about 55,000 clients of CCG. Victims of the leak were under supervision at the center, where they are assisted in fighting oncological diseases.

The stolen information contained names, birthdays, social security numbers, medical and insurance details, addresses, as well as information on the patients’ bank accounts. The computer may also have contained information about company employees.

A CCR representative stated that there are no grounds to suppose that the information was stolen with the intent to sell it or perform other harmful actions. CCR promised that they will try to prevent such incidents in the future. To this end they will review their safety policy and will take additional measures to protect information.

Comment by Senior Analyst at InfoWatch Nikolai Fedotov: «Thieves and consumers of stolen products are more knowledgeable today. They know perfectly well that information stored on a computer can be much more valuable than the actual computer. In their midst criminals boast about how a lucky thief stole a worn smartphone and found such valuable information on it that it let him retire. Now he’s a respectable gentleman who drives stolen cars.

There you have it!»
