Matrix Bancorp announces potential data breach

The stolen laptops contained private client data and other confidential information. However, it was all encrypted meaning nobody faces the threat of identity theft. Experts at InfoWatch point out that such a simple and effective method of protecting data is still very rare.

Matrix Bankcorp has announced the theft of two laptops which contained confidential information about Matrix Capital Bank and its clients. The computers were password-protected and all the information on them was encrypted. The corporation is currently informing its clients about the incident.

Matrix Bancorp’s chief operating officer said he was confident that the criminals would not be able to access the confidential client data. Nevertheless, the company will monitor all operations with its database and offer its customers free credit monitoring services from Equifax. The company has also offered a reward of $50,000 for information that leads to the retrieval of the two computers.

The theft occurred in downtown Denver at lunchtime on July 28 sometime between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. The thieves simply entered the office while there was no one there and took the two laptops. The company is currently helping the FBI and local police with their investigation.

“This is a good example of how to safeguard your data. The company not only encrypted all its information but also offered its clients free monitoring services, and announced a reward for the return of the laptops. Unfortunately, today very few firms protect their clients’ privacy and their confidential data as effectively as that,” says Denis Zenkin, marketing director at InfoWatch.
