Disgruntled system administrator turns to sabotage

A disgruntled former system administrator at a provider company has left a number of clients without access to the Internet. According to InfoWatch, bosses need to approach the threat of information sabotage extremely carefully because just one such incident can cause multi-million dollar losses.

Authorities in Ukraine have launched a criminal case following disruption to the work of an Internet provider’s computer network. A former system administrator at the provider decided to take revenge after the company fired him. Using his knowledge of the firm’s data systems, the saboteur cut Internet access to a number of the provider’s clients. Specialists noted that the incident, which involved a wireless device built by the former employee, was the first criminal case of its kind in Ukraine.

“Sabotage is one of the most dangerous forms of internal threat. Despite the fact that it is fairly rare, some acts of sabotage lead to enormous losses and in state agencies it can threaten national security. Therefore, it is essential for management to address the problem of information sabotage and to strengthen the relevant safeguards in their corporate IT security policy,” warns Denis Zenkin, marketing director at InfoWatch.
