An employee has been terminated and roughly 900 patients are being notified following a privacy breach in Saskatchewan’s Heartland Health Region, thestarphoenix.com reports. According to a news release issued Thursday, a “detailed inquiry” was launched after the breach was reported in July.
It found one employee inappropriately accessed personal health information of patients through charts that were stored in an electronic record system over a 14-month period. As a result, the employee was fired and his professional association has been notified of his actions.
The health region is mailing out letters to the affected people, offering them information on the breach itself and the region’s follow up actions.
The release indicated Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Health, the provincial privacy commissioner, and eHealth Saskatchewan have been made aware of the breach.
