The Hong Kong Registration and Electoral Office reported two laptops went missing with the personal data of 3.7 million voters being compromised, including their IDs, addresses and mobile phone numbers, scmp.com informs.
In addition to the voters’ personal data, the devices also stored the details of 1,200 electors of the Election Committee. The two laptops were stolen from a locked room at the AsiaWorld-Expo, the Electoral Office adds and stresses that the data had been encrypted.
The Electoral Office employees immediately reported the laptop loss to police, with the case being treated as theft. A spokesman for the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data said it had received “verbal notification” of the case from the Electoral Office.
