InfoWatch Traffic Monitor 4.0: data crawling solution

Dubai, 03 June 2013 - InfoWatch, a global market leader in DLP solutions, has announced the launch of InfoWatch Traffic Monitor version 4.0, a new updated version of the software which provides companies with the ability to monitor the movement of confidential documents, including those containing binary data such as audio or video files and CAD drawings for an added measure of safety and data security.

The solution is built around the ability to add reference documents based on binary data as well as extracted text. For example:  an IT security officer can track the movements of a PowerPoint presentation through adding a reference document based on it. The system will register that the presentation has been sent over a monitored channel if an employee sends a file itself; or a copy without the text with the images only; or vice versa.

The solution is capable of providing analysis of text extracted from intercepted data even with typos and transliteration. This ensures that even paraphrased data from a registered source is captured. The new version of the solution has got the extended categorization of text objects by industry and country. The object categories include Financial, Insurance, Oil and gas, Manufacturing, and Telecommunications, and Personal data.

Besides, categorization of the text objects now considers the specifics of such countries as  Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, etc.

Additionally, the number of file formats that can now be monitored have increased to include publishing systems, CAD, audio and video formats, and planning systems.

Natalya Kaspersky, CEO of InfoWatch Group of Companies and the official spokesperson for the Middle East and North Africa commented: "Historically speaking, monitoring binary information has proven to be a challenging task for CISOs and IT security managers around the world, mainly because of the very nature of binary data and channels of communication. However, InfoWatch's Traffic Monitor now provides companies with an effective way of monitoring complex sets of data transmitted across multiple channels to trace activities and ensure data fidelity."

Traffic Monitor 4.0 supports multi-channel monitoring, including the data transmitted over IM services such as Skype (including shadow copying of voice talks) and GTalk. Other channels supported by 4.0 include:

FTP transfers; SMTP network monitoring including traffic from mobile devices; Network connections: Traffic Monitor can block network connections that aren't on the 'permitted' list; CD/DVD writing: The system can prevent unauthorized duplication of data in addition to supporting the creation of shadow copies; Network and local printers; Portable devices.

The new version of the software also includes improved analysis of Microsoft Office documents as a result of a more detailed analysis of the structure of the documents, including elements such as footnotes, watermarks, comments…etc.

Other updates include improved and instantaneous alerts to the security officer and improved spam filtering with the following added tools:

Filtering of Microsoft Exchange notifications; Filtering of notifications from mobile applications for synchronization with mail services.

To complement Traffic Monitor, InfoWatch has also announced the release of InfoWatch Crawler module (v.1), a tool that scans employee workstations, publicly accessible network data repositories and document management systems, and creates shadow copies of retrieved documents which are then transferred to the Traffic Monitor server for further analysis and policy enforcement. The tool has built-in capabilities to monitor the load on the organization's network.

InfoWatch Crawler monitors where documents are placed on network resources, and it records the location of the document according to the policy established in InfoWatch Traffic Monitor, and if the tool is granted network administrator rights, then it also searches for documents in local folders stored on workstations.

An example of how the system works: There is a requirement that a document is stored in one permanent location on the network, and its distribution within the company is limited. This tool enables you to determine where the document has been published other than in the permitted location, including, as noted above, on local workstation resources.

"These launches only serve to cement our commitment to data security," added Natalya. "Many of us operate in data-filled environments, and our complementary allows companies to manage the flow of terabytes of data to ensure safety, security and fidelity."
